Looking foward vs. loving what is

Source: fitsugar.com via April on Pinterest

I always thought St Patrick's Day was one of those fake holidays like Halloween. Apparently I was wrong because I have the day off work because of the holiday. Thank you, St Paddy!

You know how Carrie on Sex and the City is always saying she "got to thinking" about this & that? Well, today I pulled a Carrie and got to thinking about something. Shocking, I know.

Everyday, I inevitably think about places to go, things to see. Today, in the midst of one of these dream sessions about travel and things I want to buy, I stopped myself with a reminder to live in the present. That's something I've always had a hard time with. My mind is always set on the future. To do lists, places to go, things to achieve; they often consume my consciousness. It seems like I'm waiting for something else to come around in life. Some new adventure.

Me & my good friend Shannon on a flight to Krabi, Thailand last year... My most recent adventure.
There are so many things I'm looking forward to - working at Easter Seals summer camp, summer in general, seeing weight loss results, going camping, spending weekends with Steve now that his hockey team shit the bed and lost big time... I have no "big" plans like a trip abroad but these little things keep me smiling.

I'm sure there are ways to stay grounded... By recording events of everyday in one of these calendar journals, or keeping a daily gratitude journal. I made a few of these calendar journals as gifts and should've made another one for myself. These two things would force you to take time to really reflect on the present and maybe even be a reminder of how you're contributing, or not contributing, to the world.

DIY Daily Calendar Journal
Perhaps that should be my next goal. Make myself one of these journals to keep me focused on the things I can do today rather than tomorrow.

How do you stay in the present when there are so many things to focus on in the future?

This is a great post, I'm sure it's something we all have a hard time with on occasion. I like your idea of a calendar journal. It's simple, but I find that snapping pictures on Instagram, or just for my personal camera roll keeps me present and reminds me to enjoy the little things in everyday life.

I've been thinking about this question a lot lately- how do I stay grounded? It is not in my nature to be grounded and when I force myself into it, I usually end up much more scattered then where I started out. Slowly but surely, I'm finding ways to focus that energy that would be spent thinking about a million ways the future could go into things like making daily to-do lists and just writing in a journal until there is nothing left for me to write. I also am a dance/choreographer so I have that creative outlet as well. It's not always a perfect practice but it's been a lot more fulfilling then wondering why I can't focus on the here and now as much as people around me can.

I have the same problem!! I'm always wishing away days looking forward to what's ahead. I am always reminding myself to enjoy this time now because one day I'll miss it.

That is a fabulous gift idea! I love it! And I would make one for me if I wasn't already journaling in a legit humongous journal I'm trying to fill haha. :)

This is absolutely perfect. I'm always looking for the next place to go, thing to do, whatever, and have to remind myself to stay in the present. I love taking a minute for meditation, or spending some time taking pictures of now
