Hey there Porchlight followers! It is such a pleasure to be hanging out with all of you today! My name is Elyssa and I have a blog called The Wellness Doer where I write about wellness, positivity, and life’s randomness. Come over and say hi! Lesley asked me to write you all a little something, but it ended up being a lot of something, but it’s all good stuff, I promise. Enjoy!
Whether you meditate or not we can all use a little de-stressing right? If you take the definition of meditate it says that meditation is to focus one’s mind for a period of time and/or to use as a method of relaxation. If you take on the view point that “meditation is to focus one’s mind for a period of time” then it would be safe to say that everything we do in life is a meditation, but we are not very relaxed. So then why are our minds so crazy?!
I don’t have all the answers, but I can offer up a simple suggestion. It’s what we eat. Yep, part of our stress comes from what we consume every day. There are foods that will make your mind and heart race and there are foods that will soothe you. The following are just some simple ways to clean up your diet that may result in a little less stress in your mind and body.
Avoid Too Many Ingredients
The more ingredients an item has the more energy it’s going to take your body to process it. Which is why it’s so important to stick to fruits and vegetables and whole fresh foods. Lesser the ingredients the better. It’s especially important to avoid artificial ingredients and GMO’s. Your body does not know how to process these things and will use up a ton of energy to get them out. Which can lead you to feeling sluggish and cloudy.
Drink Your Water
You probably hear this one a lot I know, but it is really important. Water helps cleanse the body. When you wake up in the morning drink a big glass of water and hour before you eat. This will help flush out any toxins from the body, setting your body and mind up for a good day. The rest of the day make sure to drink your other 7 glasses.
Ask Yourself These 2 Questions
1. Does it provide good nutrition?
2. Is it cleansing to the body?
If the answer is no to either then you may want to cut back or skip all together.
Cut Back on Sugar, Salt and Caffeine
Easy to say, but not easy to do. These things seem kinda obvious as to why they are on the list. We know they can cause so many issues in the body. By consuming large amounts of sugar and salt over the course of the day, we can cause our bodies a lot of stress. If you really love your sweets, just cut back as much as you can. Caffeine makes our hearts race and our minds crazy. If you do drink coffee or tea never drink it before meditation or yoga. Also, avoid soda.
Most important. When you eat, take on the practice of thinking about all the things that went into you being able to enjoy that meal. If you are eating a bowl of fruit it could go something like this... I am grateful for the sun, I am grateful for the rain, I am grateful for the soil, I am grateful for the farmers, I am grateful for the truck driver who delivered the fruit, I am grateful for... you get the idea. Being in a space of gratitude is a meditation in itself. Apply that to all areas of your life and watch it transform.
Just simple changes may have you feeling more relaxed in no time! If you are interested in more make sure to check out my article on “Crap Healthy People Don’t Eat”. Thanks for hanging out!
Much Love, Elyssa
